Final Sega Pictures

The idea of the Chaos Emerald energy drink is derived from the definition of the Chaos Emeralds – that they 'give energy to all living things'. What else would be better than playing a Sonic game and needed that hype to carry Sonic on to the next level? Or to give strength to beat the evil Doctor Eggman in combat?

The drink is geared towards the classic Sonic the Hedgehog fans, ranging from ages 18-44. Focusing on this audience, the design of the cans and the box references the 16-bit era of the classic Sonic games.

One of the design elements we incorporated was choosing the gold ring around the top of the can to represent the in-game rings. Another detail to take notice of is the printing method used for the can. It is a dual tone black. The combination of black on process black creates a holographic detail to the label all the way around the can, which is based on the Green Hill zone in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Aesthetics of the box include using the item boxes. These item boxes hold much value in the game and we wanted to include the face of Sonic and the iconic gold ring for the other side of the item box, which contains the four cans. All flavours were derived from four of the colours of the chaos emeralds; yellow as lemon, blue as blue raspberry, green as green apple and red as fruit punch.

In this celebrated 4 pack, the consumer can buy and try all of the flavors or share with friends. These people could be the gamers playing the games or just the collectors out there.

Deborah Adler

American designer, Deborah Adler, designs efficient and pro consumer medicine bottles. I know this is old news but, I still find design to effect the way people live – and more importantly improve it – to be the reason why I design.

Documenting for YCN Submission

These are pictures of Jak and I setting up for our Chaos Emerald Energy Drinks in the photo studio at the University of Brighton. The facilities are huge and are all set up for very professional photos (as you can tell from the lights, table, and on monotor preview).

Hopefully Sonic likes what they see but not only that but a very proper proposal for the rest of the marketing plan and reasons for the success of the launch of out drink, in order to be given a chance to have our product launched in the 'real world' by Sega.

Our final photos will be released on this blog after submissions are made.

YCN Brief: SEGA Final Round

These photos aren't the best quality images, there will be more up and the final pictures will be posted. Better lighting and some final design tweaks are needed to finish the final product for the live SEGA brief. Word on the street is that whomever wins the competition gets to work with SEGA to make their idea and design put out on the market. Fingers crossed.

CHAOS EMERALD ENERGY
Gold cans with designed sticker label seal. The background of black, on the cans, are made up of designer black and regular black to add a holographic level to the can when it's in light or hits the light.
THE BOX
The box carries all four flavored cans of the Chaos Emerald Energy drink for a limited edition Sonic Pack.

Peace Tea | Final Statement

TWO SENTENCES
(1) My ethos and logos containers capture the same message of sharing. (2) Ethos promotes sharing your personal voice with a community and logos promotes the size of the can being large enough to share.

STATEMENT
Bitting down on the plastic ends of the pins as I'm hanging up my work for final critique, stepping back, and thinking, "Yeah, I did that." is such a pleasing feeling. Wrapping up weeks of work in a final statement enforses that. When I first started working on my packaging I wasn't sure what the outcome would look like. Through sketches and sketches and sketches and (digital) sketches, I finally have come to the end. Through my choice of products (1), my sketches throughout the process (2) (3), digital sketches and final direction choices (4) (5) (6) I have reached my final package designs (shown below).

INTENT
Logos is displayed by the concept and benefit of the can's size. Because the can is so large, it's perfect for sharing. This is where the double straws come in. Creating a heart, the straws emphasize the concept of sharing is caring. As simple as the message was, I decided vectored images was the best graphic approach for redesigning the package.

Ethos is displayed through the concept of sharing your voice with others using an online community. Creditability is gained as the online community grows. The hand-rendered type and drawing [of the girls] adds a sense of personal community as well as creativity.

Pathos (the original can) displays the eager action of peace to the consumer. An emotion of support and action become present. It uses bold imagery, color, and strong graphic drawings and colors to almost yell "this is really important!" Even when I first picked up the can, I couldn't tell if I was excited to spread peace or annoyed by the thought of "hippies".

LINEAR PROCESS
This is my linear process for my logos packaging.

MISSION STATEMENT
Q: What's tall, supports peace and community, is all natural, and doesn't wreak of pachouli?
A: Peace Tea.

Peace Tea isn't just about peace, it's about getting rid of the things that don't make you feel good. Ever push someone over on the playground? I bet you felt bad. Ever hand someone an ice cold Peace Tea? I bet you and the other person felt good. That's what we're about at Peace Tea. Making the sun shine brighter, your body feel better, and turning the bad guys into good guys.

If you've ever felt like you're not part of a community or felt your opinion doesn't matter, Peace Tea is here to listen, watch, and help bring people together. The only thing that sounds better than laughter is the noise of someone cracking open a can of Peace Tea. Going against the grain and being apart of a revolution never tasted so good.
