Icons // Narrowing Out Color Swatches

After viewing the icons swatches I collected, Ben & I came up with some connotative words that the colors displayed. After writing down at least 3 connotations for each color swatch created, I made a list of connotations that have to do with my story, Vision Quest.

List of connotations that have sprouted from my story:

Pride, growth/journey, unknown, discovery, spiritual, calm, deep, expectation, fulfillment, organic, drive, passion, independence, joy, comfort, glory, power, knowledge, heritage, tranquility, meditation, etc.

After crossing the two lists, I have been able to throw out color swatches who's connotations did not agree with those of Vision Quest. Taking part in this process is just another way to narrow down and realize everything you do has a purpose.

With that being said, some words that come to mind are branching back again, from the beginning of the semester; legibility, scale, cohesion, and remembrance. I need to make a list of "important design words". Iteration wold definitely be on there as well. . .

Icons // Color Application Digitally

Here are my icons with 30 different color schemes and designs.

I went a little buck wild and ended up with 90 individual icons. *PHEW*

Icons // Color Swatches [Cont]

The color swatches below were gathered from images and patterns that inspired my icons and the pattern found in my icon.

When I picked the three base colors from the icons, I looked for a light, medium, and dark range or colors that worked together. From there, I took the lightest color, and made it the start lightest color for the next branch and worked backwards, for the base dark color, it was made the darkest color on the next brand and worked towards like, and so on and so forth.

Icons // Color Application

Starting to use color on a freshly design icon is a very exciting feeling. Figuring out all the of variables on how you can apply color to create interest, dimension, focal points, etc. is a lot to think about. Below are some ideas I had for adding color to my icons. The ones that have the numbers squared are paths that I will further explore.

Ideas 1 & 2 will be combined experiment and ideas 8 and 10 will be pushed and further explored. So there you have it, 3 different directions to explore.

Pictures for Color, Drawing, & Form

Here are some pictures I am taking for a book that will be made for the Color, Drawing, & Form class. I am concentrating on outfits and different colors of fabrics for these outfits. At first, I was wanting to create pictures cropped like this:

But then I thought that the wall and skin would count as a color so I started cropping my images closer to negate any confusing tones in the compositions:

Upcoming are eight color studies brought forth by Johannes Itten and his book The Seven Color Contrasts. We are studying all elements demonstrated below. Now all of mine are completed but there will be an update shortly. Keep in mind that the Color Aid, once scanned, or photograph and then uploaded online depict a different color than actual sitting in front of you.

Environmental Narrative

Using photography, we are creating an accordion book to house our interpretation of "found color arrangements". It will form a narrative view from the environment on color systems that we will study in particular.

i. Clothing pairs -- “Preparing for the Day”

My proposition is to take pictures of my roommate wearing different outfits.

ii. Plates of food -- “Food Coloring”

My proposition is to take photos of different meals or food, on one plate, together. A color combination with food is interesting and gives for great variety in texture when photographed.

iii. Book covers -- “Reading into Color”

My proposition is to take pictures of book covers from the KCAI Library. I couldn’t really think of anything that I was around enough that had a nice, big color arrangement so this is kind of a last choice for me.

Delineation and Scale

For the following project it was assigned we had to pay crucial attention to detail and measurements. Centering was a huge factor as well as getting any images right. First, we were assigned to do the following assignments below by hand, and then by computer. It was a long but amazing experience. It was very humbling and realistic to the designing by hand experience.
