Prepping for Sophomore Review

For final review for my sophomore year in graphic design I need to come up with project that can easily represent what I have learned in one whole year in the graphic design department at KCAI. A couple of main points that have come across are: hierarchy, color, form, typography, process, conceptual thinking, motion, narration with type and imagery, and using analog and digital materials and means.

The projects that I wish to present are as follows:

TYPE II POSTER: This poster shows my ability to be conceptual and idealistic in a direction of emphasis on the personality of Sheila Levrant de Bretteville. By using the color pink, replacing the letter "i" with a symbol of a woman, and changing the scale of the type shows hierarchy. Giving all of the type a place to line up in a complex, yet neat and simple grid, made for a very pleasing layout of text. TYPE II // VISCOM II SPREADS & INFOGRAPHS: Tying my theme together with imagery and text was just the first phase of these spreads. By tying the spreads together I made very simply read infographs that correlate to the spreads. Keeping them old looking but making them a little more contemporary put a new spin on things and kept things fresh. IMAGE MAKING: Seven Deadly Sins

With the seven deadly sins book, I was able to conceptually make up a character for each of the seven sins. I also was able to create a scene of people through imagery and tell a story.

VISCOM 2: Line Study Book

My line study books shows successful use of typography on the front page and as you move along it is easy to notice the beautiful juxtapositions that are entailed on each page. This project also was tied together with a narrative, or story, about a journey through life. All of the pictures show balance in color when all spread out do to compositions and order of each spread.
VISCOM 2: Taxonomy

My taxonomy shows my ability to organize and collect information in a interesting manner. Using my typography, research, and photography skill, I created a realistic spread. A spread that is very much like that of a documented police office file. This also presents my skills to move analog shapes and marks and create them into a digital composition successfully.

IMAGE MAKING: Sid Vicious Poster

Doing research on a person and trying to create and actual scene outside of the studio was a lot of fun and a lot of work. Planing for a shoot and coming up with different indexes and symbols of a person used a lot of creative thinking. After that, placement and view came into the picture. And then editing and cropping the image. All of these things came together to create a very successful poster that uses the power of narration to invite the viewer to inspect the poster even more.

Color Study Find

I was in a parking garage the other day, with my parents, and I stopped dead in my tracks. I saw these cars, on the plaza, in a parking garage and took a picture. These cars and thought "color study" right away. The light in the parking garage made the cars look like they were changing in chroma, from a darker green (the car to the right) and fading down to a grey (the car to the left). Thought I would share. I thought it was quite the find.

Upcoming are eight color studies brought forth by Johannes Itten and his book The Seven Color Contrasts. We are studying all elements demonstrated below. Now all of mine are completed but there will be an update shortly. Keep in mind that the Color Aid, once scanned, or photograph and then uploaded online depict a different color than actual sitting in front of you.

Study of Oppositional Pairs: A Focus on Contrast

Here is the layout of my final book for Color, Drawing, and Form. Oppositional pairs and contrasts were built off of our final 12 inch letter. Photographs and different words were explained through photograph and layout next to their opposing image. Overall, I believe my final craft on the accordion book was great. I am very pleased with the final outcome and look/feel of the book.

Environmental Narrative

Using photography, we are creating an accordion book to house our interpretation of "found color arrangements". It will form a narrative view from the environment on color systems that we will study in particular.

i. Clothing pairs -- “Preparing for the Day”

My proposition is to take pictures of my roommate wearing different outfits.

ii. Plates of food -- “Food Coloring”

My proposition is to take photos of different meals or food, on one plate, together. A color combination with food is interesting and gives for great variety in texture when photographed.

iii. Book covers -- “Reading into Color”

My proposition is to take pictures of book covers from the KCAI Library. I couldn’t really think of anything that I was around enough that had a nice, big color arrangement so this is kind of a last choice for me.

X, Y, & Z Final Documentation

Here are the final letterforms that I created for Color, Drawing, & Form. The X & Y are 6 inch letterforms built out of Illustration board. The Z is made from foam core and is a 12 inch letter form.

Designers are allowed to have a sense of humor too; right? This is a collection of the letter forms made by all of the sophomore designers, for Color, Drawing, & Form class.

All Put Together; Color, Drawing, Form

In Color, Drawing, & Form, we have put together all of the past couple of oblique drawings and other drawings we've done in Adobe Illustrator into a book. Below is the cover of my book.

The book dimensions are 11x17. The paper used was a railroad board, for the back page. For the inside was a nicer sheet of 11x17 paper and the cover was a card stock paper. I was very proud of the craft on my book and the title page. I thought the design of the "j" and the "a" on the cover summarized all that learned on the inside of the book.

Construction of Letterforms in Illustrator

In Color, Drawing, & Form class, we are working on projects in Adobe Illustrator. We're working on orthographic drawings, delineation and letterforms, environmental letterforms, elevation oblique and plan oblique drawing.
