Objects Into Icons

After a discussion about icons four very important points were made to keep in mind when creating a set of icons.

First point to make would be legibility. If you are not able to understand what the icon is or what it is communicating then start over. This refers to the last reading we had to do for a reading responds. When the "first glance" is taken, if it does not communicate, it is not doing it's job.

Second thing to keep in mind is scale. Scaling an icons is important for whatever the icons may be used for and add versatility to what it can be used for; from a poster, to a web page button with smaller pixels, it still needs to be recognizable.

Third, remembrance. What are some different features does your set of icons have to offer? When I see this icon again, will I remember where it's from or is it generic?

And the last, but not least is cohesion. To have your set work as a whole is a major goal. When items work together is reduces noise and brings flow to whatever the icons are being used for. Things that help tie an icon set together include: size, medium used to draw the icon, line weight, ratio of positive and negative space, and color.
