Project One Reading Response

Type and Image, Meggs
When it comes to image, there are many possibilities in quality, and feel of an image. The image can be as follows (from top to bottom, following the image to the left):
  • notation -- which is a linear composition, it is the simplest form of image making
  • pictograph -- heavy weight and shape, geometric forms
  • silhouette -- the primary form and shape
  • contour drawing -- a conceptual image using outlines
  • line as tone -- a black and white linear patterning
  • representation -- represents the actual object to the fullest

Imagery can also effect the mood of the composition and concept of the composition.

Principles of 2D Design, Wong
Chapter 9 in the book was about contrast. Contrast is always occurring. It's flexible (bigger, smaller, blank, filled). Some of the contrasting subjects that were displayed were:
shape, size, color, texture, direction, space, contrast of gravity, structure, position, space, gravity, and balance. The chapter made me realize for every decision you make in a composition, there is an opposite decision you can make for completely change the feel of the final product.

A Primer of Visual Literacy, Dondis
Each technique was eye opening and helpful. Some I found obvious, or natural, to my eye. The list of opposing principles were as follows:
  • balance; instability
  • symmetric; asymmetrical
  • regularity; irregularity
  • simplicity; complexity
  • unity; fragmentation
  • economy; intricacy
  • understatement; exaggeration
  • predictability; spontaneity
  • activeness; stasis
  • subtlety; boldness
  • subtley; boldness
  • neutrality; accents
  • transparency; opacity
  • consistency; variation
  • accuracy; distortion
  • flatness; depth
  • singularity; juxtaposition
  • sequentiality; randomness
  • sharpness; diffusion
  • repetition; episodicity
Each element used can effect a design tremendously: look, mood, idea, how the composition is read, how easy or hard the composition and design is to understand. All of these words help specify work and the final outcome of the project.

  1. Nice summation overall.

"The chapter made me realize for every decision you make in a composition, there is an opposite decision you can make for completely change the feel of the final product."

This was a great insight. For your post, here is also an opportunity to expand upon that by showing an example from your process where you specifically deal with this minutia.
